AI Agents Engineer
Granter is building an AI agent that handles grants end-to-end. The AI Grant Consultant helps companies discover funding opportunities, draft stronger proposals faster, and manage funded projects after approval. Our mission is to enable businesses of all sizes to leverage incentives to grow and innovate. We are deeply involved in the Portuguese startup ecosystem and were the winners of the Web Summit Pitch Competition 2025.
We are now looking for an AI Agent Engineer.
Not a backend engineer working on deterministic, predictable systems.
Not a research engineer focused on advancing models.
This role sits in between: building production systems where LLMs influence control. In practice, this means designing the graphs, tool functions, memory, and guardrails that make agent systems actually usable in production.
What This Role Involves
Be part of the tech team, working closely with engineering, product, and leadership and building features end-to-end
Take ownership of problems and move them forward without waiting for perfect specs
Take decisions, not just implement. You will help define how things are built
This is not a “just ship tickets” role. We expect engineers to stay close to the problems and product outcomes, not just code
Build AI agents in practice and integrate them into real product flows
Use AI as part of your development workflow. We welcome it as a tool to move faster, not a replacement for engineering judgment
What We Are Looking For
We care more about evidence than years, but some fundamentals matter.
You should have strong software engineering fundamentals and real hands-on experience building with LLM-based systems.
Experience
3+ years in software development
1+ year working with AI products or LLM-based systems
Additional Plus
Experience working in a startup environment
Exposure to AI agents or agent orchestration is a strong plus
Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is a plus
Experience using AI-assisted development tools effectively (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor) is a plus
Core Skills
Strong Python skills, including async/await, and solid backend fundamentals
Hands-on experience with LangChain, including LLM providers, model trade-offs, prompt tuning, tools, chains, and structured outputs
Solid understanding of agentic systems (RAG, model usage, state, multi-step workflows, agent orchestration, etc)
Good engineering hygiene, including Git, CI/CD, and testing practices
Nice to have: Django, LangGraph, Celery, Docker, Azure
Communication
Clear and direct communicator
Fluent in English and Portuguese
Able to explain technical decisions and tradeoffs
Can write good prompts (yes, this goes as a communication skill)
Mindset
Strong ownership and ability to move problems forward without waiting for perfect specs
Comfortable working with non-deterministic systems and iterating until the solution works in practice
Motivated by building in a startup environment and being close to product and real-world impact
How We Like to Work
We aim to build a team of high-agency builders - people who take initiative, move problems forward, and don’t wait for permission to improve things. You’ll likely do well here if you:
Take ownership
Focus on outcomes, not just outputs
Move ideas forward quickly through testing and iteration
Communicate clearly and give direct, no-B.S. feedback
Collaborate effectively across disciplines
Stay comfortable operating in ambiguity
Are curious about AI and how technology reshapes work
Granter is still early in its journey, and we are serious about creating an environment where things get built. People here tend to befriend each other and often stay engaged with the team beyond the strict boundaries of work. We regularly spend time together through team activities and startup ecosystem events.
If that excites you, we’d love to hear from you. If it scares you, this may not be the right place, and that’s okay.
Location Requirement
This role requires physical presence in Lisbon.
Please do not apply if you are not currently based in Lisbon.
