AI Research Engineer
Lisbon (Hybrid)
Granter is building an AI Grant Consultant, an AI agent that handles grants for your organization, end-to-end. It helps companies discover funding opportunities, draft stronger proposals faster, and manage funded projects after approval.
Our mission is to enable businesses of all sizes to leverage incentives to grow and innovate. We are deeply involved in the Portuguese startup ecosystem and were the winners of the Web Summit Pitch Competition 2025.
We are now looking for an AI Research Engineer.
Deeply technical on AI. Scientific mindset. High autonomy.
You'll own the hardest, most open-ended problems in our stack - studying what's happening at the frontier, identifying where we can do better, and proving it. With experiments, prototypes, or production code, depending on what it takes. You define the question and see it through evidence.
The right profile will likely come from an engineering or research role where they already went deep on AI agents, have built and shipped them to production, and can read a paper and know what's worth trying. Most importantly, they've owned hard problems end-to-end: hypothesis, experiment, result.
What This Role Involves
Take technical challenges - from your research or from product - and test them applied to Granter: an experiment, a prototype, or production code, whatever the question needs
Prove your ideas with evidence. Frame a hypothesis, build the experiment, measure it honestly, and let the data decide what is worth keeping
Stay close to the frontier. Read papers, test releases, separate signal from hype, and translate the useful parts into things we can ship
Take promising work from prototype to production in collaboration with engineering and product
What We Are Looking For
We care more about evidence than years, but you need engineering fundamentals and real hands-on experience with AI systems.
Experience
5+ years working in software development, machine learning, or a related technical role
1+ year specifically working with AI agents
Education
Bachelor's and master's degree in computer engineering (or a closely related field)
A master's or postgraduate qualification focused on Artificial Intelligence is highly valued
Core Skills
Strong Python skills and solid software engineering fundamentals
Familiarity with frameworks like LangChain / LangGraph and common ML/data tooling
Good engineering hygiene, including Git, CI/CD, and testing practices
Nice to have
Research experience, publications, or strong open-source contributions
Django, Celery, Docker, Azure
Communication
Clear and direct communicator
Able to explain technical decisions, experiments, and tradeoffs
Fluent in English and Portuguese
Location requirement
This role requires physical presence in Lisbon. Please do not apply if you are not currently based in Lisbon.
Mindset
High standards and a strong sense of ownership
Strong structured thinking and problem solving
Low attachment to ideas. Truth over ego, you kill your own ideas quickly when the evidence says so
Frontier-curious. You judge signal from hype and figure out what is actually worth trying
Motivated by building in a startup environment and being close to real-world impact
How We Like to Work
We aim to build a team of high-agency builders - people who take initiative, move problems forward, and don’t wait for permission to improve things.
You’ll likely do well here if you:
Take ownership
Focus on outcomes, not just outputs
Move ideas forward quickly through testing and iteration
Communicate clearly and give direct, no-B.S. feedback
Collaborate effectively across disciplines
Stay comfortable operating in ambiguity
Are curious about AI and how technology reshapes work
Granter is still early in its journey, and we are serious about creating an environment where things get built. People here tend to befriend each other and often stay engaged with the team beyond the strict boundaries of work. We regularly spend time together through team activities and startup ecosystem events.
If that excites you, we’d love to hear from you. If it scares you, this may not be the right place, and that’s okay.
